In 1980, he was appointed Chief of Army Staff (COAS), a role in which he demonstrated visionary leadership and a strong commitment to strengthening the operational capacity and professionalism of the Nigerian Army. His tenure as COAS was marked by reforms and a focus on institutional stability during a critical period in Nigeria’s military history.
Following this, General Sanda served as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) from 1981 to 1983 during Nigeria’s Second Republic. In this capacity, he became the nation’s highest-ranking military officer, coordinating the Army, Navy, and Air Force to safeguard national security and maintain strategic defense readiness.
