Truck Drivers Protest In Jos

Drivers under the National Union of Road Transport Workers ( Heavy trucks) protested in Jos yesterday over what they called persistent attack on their members in the South East. Displaying placards with inscription ,' stop killing our drivers ', Tinubu protect our members, etc, the drivers said Enugu Lopanta to Okigwe and Okigwe to Umuahia are the dangerous spot where the attacks usually take place. Leader of the protest Jafar Mahmud said harrasment of their drivers had become a daily occurrence saying goods, vehicles and other valuables have been destroyed by IPOB with many drivers killed along the route. He said on January 28 2025, four truck drivers, Haruna Jibrin, Bala Muhammad, Danladi Jafaru and Auwal Muhammad carrying tomatoes were attacked and killed on their way to Port Harcourt. He said they were attacked around Lobanta community between Imo and Abia states with the criminals filming the empty trucks and sending the videos to the owners to confirm their killing. The owners called to ask about their corpses and they were told to forget it. The incident was reported to the police in Okigwe but nothing was done. Just yesterday, he said suspected IPOB members again opened fire on truck drivers in Four Corner, Nkanu West Local Government area of Enugu. Luckily, the drivers who were conveying perishable goods to Port Harcourt survived but the trucks were looted and damaged. Pankes Moses a truck owner decried the situation saying youths also form illegal road blocks to extort money from truck drivers saying they don't discriminate as long as you are from the North. Yusuf Adamu brother to one of those killed on January 28 2025 said his deceased brother left a wife and 12 children. He wondered how they would survive without the patriach of the family.
